You Might Be a Boy Scout If

We are off and running on another banner year.  We currently have 56 boys in our pack.  While the first pack night did not go off as well as planned (cannot always count on Mother Nature), we still had a lot of fun.  The pack committee has planned so many fun activities for the next year that I know the boys will love.

I am most amazed at our new group of boys coming in this year.  Never have I had so many new families joining us on the first campout of the year.  We have 10 new families coming.  I see great things with this group.  Showing their involvement from the get go is a wonderful sign for the years to come.

I would also like to welcome Renee and Michael Owens as our new Tiger leaders.  Renee will also be handling our advancement and website.  These are no small tasks for a group this size.  Please remember to thank all your leaders, because without them we could not survive.

Here's to a great year!!!

Wow! It's hard to believe that we are ready to start on another exiting year at Pack 840. We have many new activities planned. We also are implementing a new format to the pack meetings that I believe everyone will enjoy. We'll have only 3 awards nights with the other nights being FUN activities for the boys to do.

We've taken a lot of suggestions from parents to try and make the year more exiting for all involved and I think we've come up on a winning plan. Please feel free to offer anything else you have to enhance our pack.

With all that in mind I can't wait to see all the boys’ faces again and see how they've changed and grown. Has anyone else passed me up yet? I look forward to seeing everyone on the 11th. If you know of anyone else who would like to join our group then have them come on the 4th to the sign-up night. Here's to a GREAT start of a new year!!! Lisa

Can you believe another year is already gone?  It's been so much fun to sit and watch all the boys grow and learn.  Many are now taller than me, but that's not too hard to do.  This will be the first year our Pack has ever had two Webelos 2 dens.  We'll even have two Webelos 1 dens.  That's a lot of boys for the younger ones to look up to.  We've had so much fun together.  We even had two campouts without rain.  That may be a record.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at our summer activities.  The pack is hard at work already preparing for another exciting year starting in September.  Everyone have a safe and fun summer and we'll see you back for den meetings on September 11th !!

Last week a 12 year old scout was lost for 4 days.  He was able to survive because of the things he learned in scouting.  He did a few things wrong, though.  A scout is taught that he never goes anywhere without his buddy.  This boy went alone to try to "hitchhike" home.  That too was something he should never try.  Hitchhiking is very dangerous.  The last thing he did wrong was he moved around.  If a boy gets lost he should stay put.  It's harder to find a moving target.  So since this scout didn't follw some basic rules he got lost.  If not for his scout learned survival skills he may not have survived.  Remember this when we are on any event as a unit or den.  Always keep your buddy close and never wander away without telling an adult.

Next month we will have the opportunity to take part in Scouting's big service project. All around the Nation scout units will put out bright colored bags for food and the next week collect them. All the food collected locally will stay local. Our unit has been known to collect a lot of food for this effort. To keep up this tradition we need all the boys who are available to help. Please consider helping us to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We never know when the ones needing help the next time would be us. Thank you in advance for helping the Scouting for Food program.

Well it's that time again. In just 10 short days we will say "goodbye" to another group of boys as they make their journey onto Boy Scouts. We wish them well. One of these boys was with us as a Tiger and the rest either Wolves or Bears. I have had the pleasure of watching them grow up. I'm always amazed at how fast time flies. These boys will go on to experience great things in Boy Scouts. They will learn all about leadership and will work hard toward their ranks. I will miss them, but I know they will be in good hands. Let's all congratulate the boys of Den 1 as they walk across our bridge onto bigger and better things.

As Thanksgiving ends I wanted to share what I'm thankful for. I'm thankful for family, decent health, great kids and friends who love me. These tend to go without saying, but I'm also thankful for great Leaders in this group. As I travel from Pack to Pack I often hear how do you recruit leaders so easily. I tell them it has nothing to do with me but everything to do with the leaders that are already here. We have leaders who are enthusiastic. Who love doing this and being with the boys. It shows everywhere and it makes other adults want to become part of it. I'm biased, but I believe we have one of the best packs out there. We've had wonderful growth in the past four years and it's because of the leaders and boys.

As we continue through this holiday season and the stress of it all starts to catch up with us. Let's just take a little time to stop and enjoy our children. They are the reason we're trying to do everything, but all they really want from us is time. Remember they are a gift and we should cherish them always.

During the months of November and December our unit has the opportunity to make a difference for some very important people. We do the bulk of our service projects during this time. We will continue our tradition since 9/11 of making care packages for our troops in either Afghanistan or Iraq at our November pack meeting and delivering "goodies" to the local police and fire departments on December 23rd. We do this to thank these people for keeping us safe and protecting our freedom. This year we will do something new by having a Toys for Tots campaign. This will benefit those children that otherwise would not have a Christmas. I have always been very proud of our unit for all the work it does for other people. Keep up the good work and enjoy your families during all the upcoming holidays.

We are off to a roaring start. It looks like everyone has already settled into a routine in just two short weeks. We have a record number of boys this year. We currently have 58 boys. That's amazing!

I'd like to welcome Justin Buehler as our Tiger leader. He has 11 boys to start and is doing a wonderful job. I hope everyone enjoys this year. I know I will.

Welcome back to another new and exciting year with Pack 840. We have a wonderful year planned with new field trips. We'll start off this month with a skating party for the boys and their families. This event is free except for skate rental. We will be having sign ups for new boys on the 5th. If you know of someone who wants to sign up and they missed the meeting just have them contact a leader and we'll get them the information. We already have 7 new Tigers joining us from last spring's Tiger roundup. This group has already done many things with the pack so I expect that they will be very active. I can't wait to get started and see all the boys again. Let's see who passed me up in height this summer. I bet most of the 5th graders did and probably quite a few others.

I hope you all had a great summer and we'll see you on the 12th.

It's hard to believe that another year is over. I'm always amazed at how much the boys learn and grow in one year. It seems like it always happens too fast. I want to thank the boys for a wonderful year and their parents for being so dedicated to their sons' futures. I believe that we have a wonderful program that couldn't be done without a great group of leaders. Please thank your leaders for a job well done. They work very hard to provide a quality program week after week.

I hope to see all of you at our many summertime events. Have a fun and safe summer. Den Meetings will resume on September 12th!!

Thanks to all who helped with the Scouting for Food. With the weather, illness and so many activities this month we were short-handed the first Saturday. But, everyone stepped up to help the following Tuesday during den times. It makes me proud to know that in a pinch this group is always willing to help.

This month we will be extremely busy. We have the zoo trip, pinewood derby and Scouting for Food. Our annual commitment to Scouting for Food has turned out to be a lot of fun. The boys spend time putting the bright red bags on people's doors only to return the next week the "search" for those bags and pick them up. We will have 2000 bags to put out this year and need at least 20 scouts to help. We will put these out in Russell territory. This food goes to our local food banks. Remember that scouts promise to do a good turn daily.

We sometimes describe our future as the time when our 'now' becomes 'then.' In the future we will have many new things in our lives - new gadgets, new cars, new friends, and new ways of doing things. But we have to keep a few of things with us - our memories and our past. Make your 'then' great by doing the best you can during your 'now.'

Here we are about to start another year. I can't believe how fast the last year has gone. We've had a lot of fun. We've done a lot of new things. I can't wait to see what the New Year brings. I hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year.

We are about to enter the month for giving. Both Hanukkah and Christmas have giving as part of their heritage. Giving is truly a wonderful thing. As I look around our pack I see a very giving group. We have agreed to sponsor a family this year through the Epilepsy Foundation. The family is made up of a single mother and 9 children. One child has epilepsy and the mother is ill, also. I knew when approached to help this family that this group would step up and give them a wonderful Christmas. I'm constantly reminded how great a group we have. May you all feel blessed this Holiday Season. I know I do.

Next month is Thanksgiving. It is a special time to give thanks for all we have and for all our friends. Of course, we should always give thanks even when it isn't Thanksgiving. I give thanks for the sunshine we had on Saturday of Webelos Weekend. It wasn't expected so it was extra special to feel the sun's warmth. I also give thanks for the deer we saw cross through the meadow. It was a wonderful reminder of the beauty we were surrounded by at Woodland Trails. Last, I give thanks for the wonderful Leaders, parents and boys who make up this great Pack. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving

Welcome back to another fun and exciting year. We have added a few things and changed some others to have a better program to offer. We've added many new field trips so that there should be something for everyone. Also, popcorn has changed a little to allow for a Columbus Zoo trip in the Spring. I also want to welcome all the new boys this year. It's all about the boys. Last, welcome to Trish and Monte who are the new Tiger leaders. I can see that they will do a fantastic job.
